Your recovery doesn’t stop at 12 weeks, and neither does ICBC coverage — but after the initial period it’s no longer automatic. To keep treatment covered, your health care provider works with your ICBC recovery specialist to approve additional treatment based on your ongoing needs. Staying in regular contact with your recovery specialist helps approvals happen sooner.
No — the automatic pre-approval ends, but you can still get treatment covered beyond 12 weeks when it’s medically needed. The difference is that continued treatment now requires your provider and recovery specialist to agree on a plan, rather than being pre-approved by default.
Ask your health care provider to recommend continued treatment and communicate that to your ICBC recovery specialist. Because approval depends on this back-and-forth, it helps to keep your recovery specialist updated regularly — ICBC suggests reaching out every 2 to 3 weeks. Providers experienced with ICBC can handle much of this coordination for you.
Treatments outside the pre-approved list — including occupational therapy — are arranged the same way: your provider recommends it and your recovery specialist approves funding. This is common for return-to-work support, home assessments, and personal care needs that become clearer as your recovery progresses.
For serious, permanent, or catastrophic injuries, ICBC offers additional benefits beyond standard treatment — including higher personal care assistance coverage and support for extraordinary expenses. Your recovery specialist can tell you whether you qualify.
Swift Health coordinates ongoing OT, physio and active rehab with ICBC recovery specialists so your care continues past the initial 12 weeks without gaps, and we direct bill ICBC. See our ICBC treatment page.
Does ICBC stop paying after 12 weeks? No — automatic pre-approval ends at 12 weeks, but treatment can continue when your provider and recovery specialist agree it’s needed.
How do I extend ICBC treatment? Have your provider recommend continued treatment and coordinate approval with your ICBC recovery specialist; staying in touch every 2–3 weeks speeds this up.
Can I still get OT after 12 weeks? Yes — OT is arranged through your recovery specialist on your provider’s recommendation, before or after the 12-week mark.
