Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why is an occupational therapist important for a social skills group?

There are many ways in which an occupational therapist may be able to support your child’s developing social skills, including:

1. Paediatric occupational therapists break activities down into teachable steps and then show children what is expected of them in social situations.
2. When helping children learn to play and expand their social interests, occupational therapists help identify and support child’s play and social skill development through using a child’s interests.
3. Occupational Therapists understand the impact of the environment on children and can help your child to cope better in the environments he or she finds challenging.
4. Through observation, an occupational therapist can assist in identifying a stage of play your child may be at and suggest activities that may be beneficial to further promote your child’s play repertoire.

How much does the social skills group cost?

The cost is $600 for the 12 week program, you can pay via e-transfer. You can also pay weekly, but it is still a 12 week commitment. If you wish to pay by credit card, the price is $621.60 or $51.80 / week.

How can I pay for the social skills group?

You can pay by e-transfer, cheque, Autism Funding/At Home Program and credit card.

Do I need to stay during the session?

Parents are not required to stay during the social skills group. They must return within 1 hour time to pick up the child.

Can my child bring a snack?

Yes, children can bring snacks. Please note, we are a nuts free zone. If another child has any other allergies we will notify you of what not to send for snacks.

Is it drop in sessions?

No, you must register for 12 weeks.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you miss a session, you will still be billed for the session. However you can make the session up after the 12 weeks time period in another social skills group that we offer.

What level of experience does your Occupational Therapist (OT) bring to working with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in children?

The OT has nine years of experience providing tailored support and interventions for children diagnosed with ASD.

What communication abilities are accepted within your program?

We welcome children with various communication abilities, including those who use communication devices such as iPads, as well as those who communicate through full sentences.

How do you support children who require breaks or encounter challenges during sessions?

We prioritize the well-being of every child. Our program includes designated spaces and protocols to provide support and respite for children facing difficulties during sessions.

How do you determine if our child is a suitable fit for the group?

Admission is based on various factors, including parental reports and assessments, to ensure compatibility with the group dynamic and individual needs.

Can enrolment be canceled if the program isn’t the right fit after the initial session?

Our program operates over a 12-week duration, and once enrolled, commitments are expected to be upheld. This policy ensures consistency and fosters optimal progress among participants.

Is it possible to arrange an introductory session before enrolment?

Due to therapist schedules, pre-session introductions are not feasible. However, ample time will be provided during the first session for introductions and discussions.

Which children can benefit from the group?

Swift Health’s social skills group will benefit children who don’t develop social skills at the same pace as others in their age group. This can be children who can be too active in their play. It may be children who have difficulty picking up social cues (body language, tone of voice, facial expressions). Children with social communication challenges and other types of learning issues will also benefit from this group.
